The was built in 1831 by Dhakji Dadaji who belonged to the Patharwe Prabhu community. One of the legends behind building the temple goes all the way back to the late 18th century when Mumbai was a collection of seven islands. The Governor of Mumbai, William Hornby decides to ensure that all the seven islands of Mumbai must be brought together so that people living in the low-lying areas don’t fall get affected by floods during the high tide. Since this was one of the biggest civil engineering projects of its kind, the fencing of the Worli island kept collapsing.

It is believed that this Hindu merchant named Dhakji Dadaji dreamt of a idol of the goddess in the sea. There was an immediate search for the idol and once it was found, he decided that there needs to be a temple to be built in order to go on with the project. As soon as the temple was constructed, locals believe that the goddess bless the people and helped them complete the project successfully.
